The Secrets of Mud by Mae Wilson – Episode 1

This page and those that follow are rendered in layers of watercolor and/or gouache and lined with a brush pen. The colors are muted purples, blues, grays, and browns, with a strong black ink line.

The page is divided horizontally into two panels with a large gutter between them.

1. A scene of the woods. A crow is perched on a branch in the foreground. Other branches frame the landscape, a wooded path covered with puddles from the ongoing rain. Onomatopoeias are camouflaged in the landscape: â€œSplish splish splish splish splishâ€
2. A human figure is now walking through the woods, wearing a purple hooded raincoat. They have shoulder length slightly wavy brown hair. They are framed by two trees on either side, and in the background are multiple shots of the same bird flying across the panel. The splishes continue dotting the scene.

1. We zoom in on the top half of the figureâ€™s face, whose eyes are peering to the left of the page. The background still shows trees in a wooded area along with splish sounds. From the left of the panel comes an unidentified â€œMERP.â€
2. We zoom out on the figure again, who continues walking along the path (facing the reader). They are now surrounded by unidentified sounds in speech bubbles coming from all around the puddle-covered woods: â€œGRUP. MORP. NYIP. MEP. SNERP. NERP. BYERT. SNERT. GLEP. BLURP.â€
