Early Bird by Emil Wilson – Episode 3

1. Over a pink background, Emil writes, â€œMy parents didnâ€™t take me to a doctor. Knowing them, this situation was far too embarrassing so they decided to wait it out.â€ An adult man and woman look at a little monkey in front of them. Their reactions are muted, the woman looking slightly expressionless, with only a slight frown and wide eyes. The man holds one hand to his cheek, head tilted slightly to the side and eyebrows raised in understated bewilderment. 2. Across a blue background, Emil continues, â€œTo help children with Precocious Puberty, doctors often prescribe drugs that slow or temporarily stop development.â€ An open pill bottle is lying on its side, spilling out several white disk-shaped pills. The label is obscured except for the letters â€˜STER.â€™ 3. Over a green background, the narration goes on, â€œBut I didnâ€™t take any drugs and when I got to the third grade, the hormones kicked in and I became like one of those child vampires, desperate and on the prowl.â€ Young Emil is drawn with vampire fangs and a ravenous look on his face, mouth open, eyes wide, brows bent in a scowl.

Emil writes, â€œAround this time, the names started.â€ In all-caps block letters: â€œAPE, BEAST, CAVEMAN, WOOKIE, GORILLA, SASQUATCH, CHEWBACCA.â€ Back to standard lettering, â€œThose kids are jealous, my dad said.â€ The background is blue. Emil stands to the left of the names, looking tall and broad shouldered, arms straight at his sides, frowning and scowling slightly. 2. Emil continues, â€œI ran into one of those name-calling bullies at a class reunion.â€ A man with cropped, pink curly hairâ€”perhaps the adult version of the kid from the first pageâ€”looks at adult Emil with a straight face and says, â€œI was jealous of you.â€ Adult Emil, who now has a more squared jaw and chin, responds, â€œThen why did you act like such an asshole?â€ He is scowling. The background is bright yellow. 3. In a yellow block of text, the narration says, â€œAs I was growing up, I watched movies about kids who found themselves trapped inside adult bodies. I could empathize.â€ The movie posters for Freaky Friday, Big, and 13 Going On 30 are spread out behind the text block. There is no color wash separating this panel from the white background of the page.
