Max, Foster Dog by Maia Iotzova – Episode 1

This comic is illustrated in color markers. Each panel on this page seems to be cut and pasted onto the final page, so there is a slight shadow cast around the built-in border. In three different strips of paper and different color markers, the title: â€œMax, Foster Dog.â€ In another, with hand-drawn serif lettering: â€œExcerpt of the graphic novel in progress.â€ â€œPieces of Meâ€ â€œby Maia Iotzova (same name, in Cyrillic alphabet)â€ The first proper panel, in the same serif lettering: â€œOver a few years my world started shattering. Emotional connections between me and my loved ones were mysteriously disappearing, leaving me in fear and confusion. Finally, I experienced a psychotic breakdown, losing my sense of self and my connection to reality. My life was in ruins!â€

Each panel of this page is circular, and each of its components is cut and pasted in different layers, colored with marker. 1. Over a gray background, two alien-like figures, shaped like eyeballs with green irises, no pupils, and stick-figure arms and legs; one is oriented vertically, the other horizontally. The ground is collaged with thin strips of newspaper, like a pile of sticks. The wide eye is floating away and calls out, â€œHelp! Iâ€™m getting sucked into space.â€ They both reach their arms out to each other. 2. They close the gap between them, holding hands. 3. The wide eye is back on the ground. The tall eye says, â€œAre you ok?â€ The wide replies, â€œThat was scary!â€ 4. A loosely peanut-shaped figure appears from the left, floating and yelling, â€œHelp!â€ The wide eye says, â€œOh myâ€¦She is also flying into space.â€ 5. The tall eye brings the peanut down to the ground and wraps their arms around both of the othersâ€™ â€˜backs.â€™ They say, â€œListen, we have to find a way to stay grounded!â€ 6. All the figures are in the same position, but slightly pulled apart so they can look at each other better. The peanut says, â€œYes, this is an emergency!â€
