Hold Still Episode 51

1. On a mostly black background, a cluster of pink oyster mushrooms lined with silvery highlights stands out. A sliver of gray sky cuts through the black, hilly earth at the top of the panel. â€œNovember 2. Rough day. My lower back is still hurt and I just felt sickish. Worked. Then class with stupid team project and discussion thread. Pink oysters are fruiting.â€
2. A large house cat is lying on Kimâ€™s desk, one paw hanging over the edge. The cat is on top of Kimâ€™s paper, and presumably the keyboard. A cup of coffee is off to the side. The monitor is open to a slideshow presentation. â€œNovember 3. Worked on school stuff in the morning, then late shift at work. Got my period, crampy.â€
3. From behind, we see Tony flexing his left bicep, holding up his t-shirt sleeve to show off a little bandaid near his shoulder. â€œNovember 4. Spent all day working on paper, then class. Tony and Mom got their boosters.â€
4. Enzo is standing in the middle of a room in Kimâ€™s house. He is looking down at something. A cat is closer in the foreground. â€œNovember 5. Tony and I drove in the rain for an appointment with my advisor at FGCU. Worked until 7 pm.â€
5. A little girl is sitting at a desk and drawing in a large open sketchbook. On the right page of the spread is the word, in large capital letters, â€œMOMO.â€ â€œNovember 6. Worked. Stopped by Cassâ€™ house.â€
6. Kimâ€™s dog, Molly, is lifting her chin up while getting head scratches from someone off-panel. Kim notes with an arrow, â€œMolly was doing a weird lip thing.â€ â€œNovember 7. Sunday. Finished second draft in permaculture class. Ali came by. Time change. It was a rare cool day.â€

Kim is crouching over the large pile of mulch, which is giving off steam. “December 14. Land remediation talk after work. Mulch pile is smoking :)”

Kim is squatting low to the floor in front of her mushroom monotubs, looking closely at the one directly in front of her. “October 27. Volunteered at the wolf sanctuary. Enzo went to Sammi’s powder puff game.”

Kim is turned away from the reader, sitting on the floor with legs stretched out and working in front of an empty mushroom monotub. She is drilling a large hole in the side of the tub. This panel is much more minimal than most in the series, with just a white background. “October 15. Set up mushroom monotubs before work. Mixed oyster and wine cap spawn grain into substrate (separately). Worked until 6 p.m.”

In gray and white, a medium shot shows Lynn staring into the distance, clutching a travel coffee mug and looking solemnly nostalgic. She thinks to herself, “I miss those days so hard!”

Tony is standing out his house in a large pot meant for a planted tree. He is shoveling soil from a wheel barrow into the pot. There is a pile of dirt behind him, and an already potted tree off to his side. “October 9. Worked. Planted the Venus mango tree.”
