Hold Still Episode 52

1. Kim is sweeping outside in front of a fenced enclosure, behind which two wolves prowl. There is a palm tree to their left behind the fence. Kim is wearing long sleeves and jeans. “November 8. Volunteered at the wolf sanctuary. Biochar workshop at class.” 2. Outside in a field surrounded by trees and a hut-like building off in the distance, a man is pouring something from a canister into a large cylindrical vessel that is blowing off lots of smoke or steam. The man is wearing a safari sunhat, sunglasses, a flannel long-sleeve shirt, and long pants with a walkie-talkie strapped to his belt. Kim identifies the scene as “yesterday’s biochar workshop.” She then writes, “November 9. Work, class, annoying group chat as due date nears. Zoom meeting uncomfortable.” 3. Kim is lounging in a large arm chair, reading on her phone. The shade on the window is pulled down. “November 10. Worked on final paper in the morning, I’m about 2/3 done. Work after. Enzo slept over Sammi’s. Made vindaloo.” 4. From behind, we see Kim’s cat sitting on her bed, looking over at Kim in the background with her hair wrapped in a towel, squatting naked in front of her dresser looking for clothes. “November 11. Day off from work and school. Caught up on life chores.” 5. Kim is standing outside, reaching her left arm out, gloved palm up, gesturing towards two cows standing in front of her. She is holding the staff end of a gardening tool in her right hand, but the rest is cut off. Three more cows are further off in the distance. They are all standing in a wide open grassy field. The sky is overcast. “November 12. Went out to Arcadia to shovel/collect manure. Work after.” 6. Through a mostly open door, cut off at the shoulders, we see Enzo standing at the threshold, brushing his teeth and tilting his head so we see a sliver of his face. He is shirtless and wearing sweatpants. There is another open door behind him on the other side of the bathroom. “November 13.”

Kim is crouching over the large pile of mulch, which is giving off steam. “December 14. Land remediation talk after work. Mulch pile is smoking :)”

Kim sits at her desk working on a landscape design. A wall clock and two potted plants decorate the background by the window. “December 2. Finished compost bumper sticker and worked on final design. Online class.”

Kim is lying on her side, spooning her dog and smiling softly. “November 20. Worked. Enzo slept over Mom’s. She drove him to a party after.”

Kim’s dog, Molly, is lifting her chin up while getting head scratches from someone off-panel. Kim notes with an arrow, “Molly was doing a weird lip thing.” “November 7. Sunday. Finished second draft in permaculture class. Ali came by. Time change. It was a rare cool day.”

Lynn is leaning against a wall clutching her shoulder and grimacing in pain. She calls out, “Ow! God!” She labels with an arrow that she is experiencing “frozen shoulder.”

Kim is squatting low to the floor in front of her mushroom monotubs, looking closely at the one directly in front of her. “October 27. Volunteered at the wolf sanctuary. Enzo went to Sammi’s powder puff game.”

Kim is turned away from the reader, sitting on the floor with legs stretched out and working in front of an empty mushroom monotub. She is drilling a large hole in the side of the tub. This panel is much more minimal than most in the series, with just a white background. “October 15. Set up mushroom monotubs before work. Mixed oyster and wine cap spawn grain into substrate (separately). Worked until 6 p.m.”

In gray and white, a medium shot shows Lynn staring into the distance, clutching a travel coffee mug and looking solemnly nostalgic. She thinks to herself, “I miss those days so hard!”
