7. Shooter Marble (Part II)

Lynn starts the page by narrating, “I always felt a bit weird shit-talking my Uncle Dick. He was one of the aforementioned dead uncles that left me some loot. But truly, he was a short-tempered man. Mom was quite happy to outlive him.” In a gray and white panel, adult Lynn leans close to adult Lorraine, who is sitting in a hospital bed in a cap and hospital gown. Lynn gently grabs the purse from her hand as she says, “See ya when you wake up!” A view of the hospital hallway shows dark red tinsel garland (identified as such, since it is gray and white in the drawing) in the shape of a heart monitor decorating the wall. Lynn continues, “A few years earlier, I’d worked for this hospital. It was a year-long freelance gig updating their internal website. I liked it a lot. It was a welcome change from ad agencies. There was a nice view of my old office from the waiting room.” Adult Lynn looks through a window outside, showing a hospital building past a field blanketed in snow. She thinks to herself, “I miss having an actual job.”

In full color, we see a view of a wooden walking bridge stretching across a marsh outside of a hospital building. Deep in the bridge, looking tiny in the landscape scene, Lynn and James stand next to each other surrounded by a pink aura decorated with little hearts. Lynn narrates, “When James and I were first dating, he rode his bike out to the hospital. We had a picnic lunch and a walk through the marsh on my lunch break.” We zoom in on presumably Lynn’s hand trailing behind her, along with the bottom skirt of her orange dress, as she walks past marsh reeds. Back in gray and white, a medium shot shows Lynn staring into the distance, clutching a travel coffee mug and looking solemnly nostalgic. She thinks to herself, “I miss those days so hard!” Lynn then narrates, “To say I was getting out of my comfort zone would be an understatement. But OMG Mom…”

A three panel page shows Lynn talking to a woman dressed in a surgeon’s cap and scrubs. The surgeon looks serious as she says, “There was a mass. It was way back, so we had to remove a small part of her tongue to get at it. It’s being looked at and we should have the results soon.” Lynn writes, “The lack of reassurance in her facial expression was noticeable.” Within the scene itself, she says, “How big was it?” We look at Lynn from behind, so we don’t see her expression. The surgeon responds, “Well? About the size of a shooter marble. But a little flatter.” She holds her index finger and thumb in a small circle to help visualize the size of the mass. Lynn thinks to herself, “!”

Lynn is leaning against a wall clutching her shoulder and grimacing in pain. She calls out, “Ow! God!” She labels with an arrow that she is experiencing “frozen shoulder.”

Kim is squatting low to the floor in front of her mushroom monotubs, looking closely at the one directly in front of her. “October 27. Volunteered at the wolf sanctuary. Enzo went to Sammi’s powder puff game.”

Emily is crouched down, bearing on her back the weight of a giant ball ornament twice her size. She is grimacing from pain or exertion.

This panel is much more minimal than most in the series, with just a white background. “October 15. Set up mushroom monotubs before work. Mixed oyster and wine cap spawn grain into substrate (separately). Worked until 6 p.m.”

Tony is standing out his house in a large pot meant for a planted tree. He is shoveling soil from a wheel barrow into the pot. There is a pile of dirt behind him, and an already potted tree off to his side. “October 9. Worked. Planted the Venus mango tree.”

Jim sits up in his hospital bed. There is a book open in his lap, and a tray of food slightly raised above him. He is smiling.
