1. Lynn narrates, “We started calling each other Mr. and Mrs. Banister, due to becoming human railings.” Back in the gray and white of the more present day of Lynn’s adult life, we return to a wintry scene. Framed by perhaps a view from a car window, we look on two people walking out of a house blanketed in snow and lined by leafless trees. There are a few steps leading down from the front door, and the taller person is helping the smaller person walk down them. They are dressed in winter clothes. 2. Lynn continues, “James was a natural caregiver.” We zoom in on James, the person helping Lorraine down the stairs. He is wearing a winter hat, scarf, and coat. He looks down and says, “Here, take my arm, Lorraine.” 3. In a medium shot, Lorraine holds onto James’s arm as they walk further down the path from the house. She is also dressed in a winter hat, albeit a fashionable printed one, along with a scarf and coat. She has a soft smile on as James says, “Careful…” 4. Lorraine and James have walked even further from the house, looking at each other as Lorraine continues holding on and taking small steps. Lynn writes, “Mom adored him.”

1. From Lynn’s perspective, we look down at the wheel, dashboard, and floor of the driver’s seat of the car. She is waving her hand by the air vents, thinking to herself, “C’mon, heat up.” 2. Lynn narrates, “The morning of Mom’s surgery found me feeling anxious. It helped that Dad was content to have James bring him to the hospital later, after his normal breakfast and coffee which took a couple hours.” 3. We switch views to see Lorraine sitting in the passenger seat next to Lynn in the driver’s seat. Lynn is wearing a hat, scarf, and coat, along with sunglasses that obscure her eyes, so her expression isn’t fully visible. Lorraine places a mittened hand on her chest with a look of humorous relief and says, “Just in time! Your dad was in the bathroom for an hour! G’yad. The stench!” Lynn says, “Gross! Speaking of old men, the interior light in the garage keeps flipping on by itself. When it happens we say ‘Uncle Dick’s in the garage again.’” In a thought bubble, she imagines the silhouette of a person wearing a a hat that resembles a Russian ushanka in shape, seen through the window of a house. Lorraine laughs in response, “Ha!” 4. Now a view straight on from the windshield, we see Lorraine and Lynn look at each other. Lorraine, with an unamused expression, says, “Dick was the world’s biggest asshole.” Lynn looks down at her slightly, as she is a bit taller. Her hands, wearing mittens, are on the wheel as she drives the car. But her eyes, now visible through the sunglasses, look at Lorraine. Her expression is neutral and hard to read, but she does not look amused.

Lynn is leaning against a wall clutching her shoulder and grimacing in pain. She calls out, “Ow! God!” She labels with an arrow that she is experiencing “frozen shoulder.”

Kim is squatting low to the floor in front of her mushroom monotubs, looking closely at the one directly in front of her. “October 27. Volunteered at the wolf sanctuary. Enzo went to Sammi’s powder puff game.”

Emily is crouched down, bearing on her back the weight of a giant ball ornament twice her size. She is grimacing from pain or exertion.

Kim is turned away from the reader, sitting on the floor with legs stretched out and working in front of an empty mushroom monotub. She is drilling a large hole in the side of the tub. This panel is much more minimal than most in the series, with just a white background. “October 15. Set up mushroom monotubs before work. Mixed oyster and wine cap spawn grain into substrate (separately). Worked until 6 p.m.”

In gray and white, a medium shot shows Lynn staring into the distance, clutching a travel coffee mug and looking solemnly nostalgic. She thinks to herself, “I miss those days so hard!”

Tony is standing out his house in a large pot meant for a planted tree. He is shoveling soil from a wheel barrow into the pot. There is a pile of dirt behind him, and an already potted tree off to his side. “October 9. Worked. Planted the Venus mango tree.”

Jim sits up in his hospital bed. There is a book open in his lap, and a tray of food slightly raised above him. He is smiling.

Lorraine sits next to Lynn’s dad, both looking like young twenty-somethings. They are both dressed in formal wear - Lorraine in a floral print dress, Lynn’s dad in a suit and tie - and they smile for the camera.

Kim is reading from a book opened to a page full of pictures of different kinds of mushrooms. She is lounging, wearing comfy pants and sitting with her knees up. “September 8. Ordered mushroom cultivating supplies after doing some research. Worked until 7 p.m.”

Kim tends to a rack of bananas hanging from a rod in her house. “September 7. Felt crappy again. Made a big wall calendar to help manage time. Had class today.”
