Early Bird by Emil Wilson – Episode 1

This comic is illustrated with bright watercolors in a predominantly turquoise, orange, green, pink, and yellow palette. Characters have slightly grotesque facial features - wide, sunken eyes, bright red lips, lots of small teeth outlined in black, and big pink blush circles on their cheeks. The title of the comic is drawn in all caps alternating in the bright colors of the palette: "Early Bird." The byline is written in a font that alternates between capital letters and lowercase cursive: "By Emil Wilson." The lettering of the comic uses this font as well. 1. A young child with curly pink hair and no clothes except for a diaper points in disbelief at the diaper of the child next to them. This child has straight orange hair and is pulling their diaper away from their skin, looking down at their crotch with an expression of dismay and embarrassment. The first child says, "What's going on there?" The other replies, "Stop pointing." The background is painted with a turquoise wash. 2. We zoom in on the pink-haired kid's face. Mouth still agape and eyes wide with shocked curiosity, they ask, "That means you can have babies." An orange wash colors the background. 3. We zoom in on the orange-haired kid's face. Their mouth is also agape and eyes wide with shock, eyebrows raised in anxious concern. They reply, "But I don't want to have babies. I'm only FIVE." The background is green, and the word 'five' is emphasized with green, all-caps block letters.

1. The narration is written sentence-case, slightly curly letters. It starts, "The summer before first grade, I got PUBIC HAIR. Dark, coarse, curly as a corkscrew. And since nobody had warned me this would happen, I sensed something was very wrong." The orange-haired child, Emil, is naked, looking down at his crotch, which is covered by a pink explosion/star shape. His face shows a mix of surprise, confusion, and dismay, eyebrows raised and mouth in a frown. The background is a light blue wash, and the words 'pubic hair' are emphasized with blue all-caps block letters. 2. Emil as narrator continues, "It's likely I was experiencing precocious puberty, a disorder where sexual development happens years before it's supposed to." 'Precocious puberty' is once again emphasized with blue all-caps block letters. A small Emil stands in the corner of the panel, colored in a blue wash, looking up at a giant green hand that points down at him. Emil, eyebrows raised, asks, "Now?" The background is chartreuse.

Kim is turned away from the reader, sitting on the floor with legs stretched out and working in front of an empty mushroom monotub. She is drilling a large hole in the side of the tub. This panel is much more minimal than most in the series, with just a white background. “October 15. Set up mushroom monotubs before work. Mixed oyster and wine cap spawn grain into substrate (separately). Worked until 6 p.m.”

In gray and white, a medium shot shows Lynn staring into the distance, clutching a travel coffee mug and looking solemnly nostalgic. She thinks to herself, “I miss those days so hard!”

Tony is standing out his house in a large pot meant for a planted tree. He is shoveling soil from a wheel barrow into the pot. There is a pile of dirt behind him, and an already potted tree off to his side. “October 9. Worked. Planted the Venus mango tree.”

Jim sits up in his hospital bed. There is a book open in his lap, and a tray of food slightly raised above him. He is smiling.

Kim tends to a rack of bananas hanging from a rod in her house. “September 7. Felt crappy again. Made a big wall calendar to help manage time. Had class today.”

Derek is in bed lying on his stomach. He holds the pillow over his head, pencil in hand, so he is buried under his blanket and pillow. In the background, the word "FLUSH" is written in large block letters. Derek asks, “What’s the point?”
