At the top of the panel is the question, “Why did firefighters stop using nets?†Directly below this question we see an illustration of two firefighters running with a ladder toward some flames at the upper-right corner of the panel. Below the firefighters is the text, “Life Nets [in quotes] fell out of use in the 1980s because modern aerial ladders and improved rescue techniques were safer and more reliable.â€
Panel 2:
Dominating the left-hand side of the panel is a drawing of a fire truck with an extension ladder. The truck is staffed by two firefighters. The ladder extends up toward a hand that reaches out for it. The text on the right of the panel reads, “Extension ladders on some fire trucks today can be 100 feet or longer, allowing them to reach victims in many tall buildings.â€
Panel 3:
At the upper-left corner of the panel the text reads, “A life net requires a number of strong individuals to hold and implement it safely without putting the rescuers at risk.†The illustration is a birds-eye view of someone jumping into a life net held by thirteen firefighters. A fire chief’s car and a fire truck with a ladder and a hose are nearby.
Panel 4:
The text on the left-hand side reads, “The person has to land close to the center of the net to avoid being injured. With higher jumps they might break through the net.†On the right side there is an illustration of a person jumping into a net held by nine firefighters. We see only the person’s legs at the edge of the panel as they bounce off the net awkwardly off the net and fall toward the ground.
