Panel 1:
At the top of this panel, superimposed on a dark background is the question, “Who was the guy who fell without a parachute but caught up with a fellow crewmember in mid-air and both of them came down under the same chute?” At the bottom of the panel near some white clouds at the lower left are the words, “That’s Joe Herman. He was a World War II bomber pilot on a mission over Germany.”
Panel 2:
Also superimposed on a dark background are the words, “After dropping its bombs, Herman’s aircraft was struck by enemy fire.” Below this text is a four-engine, twin-tailed bomber. Bombs are dropping into the cloud below. A crescent moon appears slightly above and to the right of the bomber. In a white cloud below the bomber are the words, “He ordered his crew to bail out. Before he could grab his parachute, the plane exploded and he was thrown into the air.”
Panel 3:
At the top left are the words, “In mid-air, he collided with crewmember John Vivash.” Most of the panel is dark but to the right you can see a helmeted airman whose parachute begins to blossom above him. This is Vivash. Herman is in mid-air diving toward Vivash a grabs him around the waist. In the background you can see shattered pieces of the aircraft falling to the ground. The following text appears on a dark background at the lower left, “He grabbed onto Vivash’s leg around the same time that Vivash was opening his parachute.”
Panel 4:
At the upper left on the white background of a cloud is the text, “The parachute inflated slowly, which helped Herman maintain his grasp on Vivash’s leg.” The illustration at the right shows Vivash holding onto the taunt cords of his parachute, which is unseen above the panel. Herman desperately holds onto Vivash’s right leg. Below, on a dark background are the words, “The two men came down safely under Vivash’s parachute.” At the bottom of the panel are rooftops and the spire of a church, indicating that they are getting close to the ground.
