Could a soldier with a malfunctioning parachute slow his (or her) fall by firing a gun at the ground?

Could a soldier with a malfunctioning parachute slow his (or her) fall by firing a gun at the ground? It’s an interesting idea but it is not likely to work… The illustration shows numerous soldiers under open parachutes while one whose parachute has not opened says “Uh oh…” Panel 2: Would the soldier put the weapon to their shoulder? If they did, they would just spin around when they fired. The illustration shows a soldier with a streaming parachute firing their weapon indiscriminately with other parachuting soldiers nearby. Panel 3: What about their chest? If the weapon were powerful enough to slow their fall, imagine what it would do to the faller’s chest. This is accompanied by an illustration of a canon firing. Panel 4: Does a plane slow down when firing its weapons? Hardly, even a World War I biplane flies on when its guns fire. An illustration shows a World War I era British biplane firing at a German triplane. So, it probably wouldn’t work, but why not try? It would create a friendly fire nightmare. This is a single-panel cartoon that describes “Speed, Distance, and Time of Fall for an Average-Sized Adult in a Stable Freefall Position.” There are three labeled axes on this graph.
