Panel 1:
The question, “What does LD50 mean?” appears at the top of the panel. Below and to the left is the text, “LD50 stands for lethal dose 50. It refers to the amount of a chemical that will kill half of the subjects exposed to it.” At the left of the panel is what looks like an oil drum with a dark liquid oozing out of it. The drum has a skull and cross bones on its side.
Panel 2:
In white text on a dark background are the words, “LD50 comes up in regard to falling in this way:” Below, in black text in a square white box are the words, “From what height is it expected that half the people who fall that distance will die, while the rest survive?”
Panel 3:
At the right of the panel is a drawing of ‘Cocky,’ the mascot for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. Cocky is standing and wears a jersey with ‘Carolina 01’ on it. Cocky’s left hand is held high with thumb and pinky finger extended in the ‘shaka’ (or hang loose) hand sign. To Cocky’s left is the following text, “A 2017 study by University of South Carolina researchers concluded that the LD50 for falling was 48 feet.”
Panel 4:
At the left of the panel are two bar-chart bars. The one on the left has the words ’48 feet’ inside it and the number 50% right above it. To its right is a longer bar with the words ’84 feet’ inside it and the number 90% right above it. At the top of the panel near the number 90% is a figure of a falling person in a dark, long-sleeve shirt and somewhat lighter long pants. Below that figure and to the right is the text, “At 84 feet, the death rate increased to about 90%. In other words, only one of every ten people who fall that far will survive.”
This cartoon is part of a series called Falling. It is written and drawn by Jim Hamilton who can be found on Instagram at Green Harbor Publications (all one word, greenharborpublications).
