Panel 1:
The question, “Who is Thomas McGarry?”, appears above an image of a twin-tailed British four-engine bomber in flight. Below the bomber are the words, “During World War II, Thomas McGarry was a bombardier on a Halifax, a four-engine British Royal Air Force bomber.”
Panel 2:
To the left of the panel, an airman looks quizzically at the ripcord in his right hand. The cord attached to it is torn completely. The following text appears to his right, “On a mission over Germany, his bomber was attacked by fighters and set on fire. McGarry Bailed out, but when he pulled his ripcord, nothing happened.
Panel 3:
At the top of the panel, the following text appears, “McGarry came down in a wooded area where his fall was broken by the branches of fir trees.” Below this text is a falling figure above a row of fir trees that slope from the upper right of the panel to the lower left. In the lower right corner, the text reads, “He survived but was knocked out and did not awaken for thirty-six hours.”
Panel 4:
At the top of the panel, the following text appears, “After days in the woods, McGarry was finally able to crawl a mile or so to a road where he found help.” Below this text a silhouetted area of trees that contains the text, “Because his parachute did not open, Thomas McGarry is known as a Free Faller.” A caption line points toward the silhouetted trees with the word, “Help!”
