Panel 1:
At the right of the first panel, a man holds his chin and has a quizzical look on his face. He has white hair and glasses, and wears a dark pair of pants and a medium-gray, long-sleeved, collared shirt. In a thought bubble above his head is the sentence, “What is the oldest long-fall survival incident?” The text at the left reads, “The oldest one that I know of happened in June of 1676 during a battle in the Baltic Sea.
Panel 2:
At the left of this panel stands a soldier with a sword in his left hand raised above his head. He has long hair and a beard. His uniform is dark with lighter patches at the collar, wrists, and knees. He wears an old-style hat and shoes with buckles. The text on the right side of the panel reads, “A 31-year-old Swedish Army major, Anders Sparrfelt, was on the warship Stora Kronan, when its powder magazine was hit by a cannon ball and exploded.”
Panel 3:
The third panel is horizontal rather than square and extends the length of the cartoon. In it we see Sparrfelt in mid-air. His buttons have popped, his hat has come off (as has one of this boots), and he has lost hold of his sword. Sparrfelt is headed toward a Swedish flag atop the mast of the ship. Below him is the text, “Sparrfelt was catapulted over two enemy ships and landed safely in the sails of the Swedish frigate Draken.”
This cartoon is part of a series called Falling. It is written and drawn by Jim Hamilton who can be found on Instagram at Green Harbor Publications (all one word, greenharborpublications).
